Your laptop's USB-C ports aren't all equal, and there's a way to tell

Recently, I splashed and bought a shiny new monitor. I brought it home and plugged my new monitor into my laptop’s USB-C port, but nothing happened; when I switched to the other USB-C port, my screen lit up instantly. Now, I assumed that plugging a USB-C accessory into any port would give me the same results. After all, the connector looked identical, so I had no reason to suspect the ports were different.
