The Taboo on Criticizing Israel Is Broken

For nearly two years, The New York Times resisted describing Israel’s assault on Gaza as genocide. It reported the mounting death toll while keeping that word safely inside quotation marks, even as human-rights organizations and genocide scholars reached that conclusion. Its coverage of Israel’s killing of Palestinian children and journalists was often cautious and qualified, reserving the strongest language for opinion pages and outside contributors. Now that the Times is finally, and begrudgingly, publishing more direct criticism of Israel, some of its own shareholders are taking it to court.
