On Sunday, The Washington Post reported that senior military leaders had warned Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that prolonging large-scale operations against Iran was unsustainable—and could weaken the military’s ability to confront threats elsewhere, including threats to the United States itself. By Monday, the Army’s top civilian leader was out. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll submitted his resignation after months of reported conflict with Hegseth over the direction of the service and the removal of senior officers.
