If you open a PC case from the late '90s, you'll find a motherboard that looks chaotic. You may see a single AGP slot for the graphics card, a row of slots for ordinary expansion, and there may be a comically long legacy ISA slot—a remnant from the 486 era. All of these were important. They solved real problems that don't exist in quite the same way today.
