New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani introduced citywide grocery stores with prices that he says will be 30% less than other retailers. This sounds great but when the government controls food supply, it usually doesn’t end up great. It usually ends up in collectivism and starvation but let’s look at the details before we judge. The mayor’s office says that “the City sets the mission, standards, and store design; experienced third-party operators run the stores day to day under those requirements.” The city will also provide $70 million in funding to build and outfit the stores, with one planned for each borough by 2029.
